Saturday
Well the surprise party went off without a hitch. It was a really good time and complete surprise for Becca. Henry sent out an invitation about six weeks ago and asked anyone able to meet up in Savannah for Becca's surprise birthday party. Steve and I had been talking just a few days prior about wanting to take another trip to Savannah and Charleston, so we were in for the fun!
I have to admit, I'm glad the party is over, I hate surprises. I'm always so afraid I will be the person to give away the secret and then I'd feel horrible. I just can't (and shouldn't) be trusted. We went into the historic area early, we wanted to get a good parking lot, somewhere central so we could walk around and then easy to get back to after dinner. We were at the restaurant in plenty of time. Becca and Henry arrived at the appointed hour and she was completely and totally surprised. Henry pulled off a good one!
I had such high hopes for our service but of course it so rarely works out that way. Our waiter started out strong, I had two cokes right away, but then it took forever to get food and drink refills, but the real struggle was the checks. EVERYONE's check were wrong the first time. The second time was really no better, the third time he got it almost right so we were just going to go with it. We gave him our credit card and he came back with the receipt, our bill was $38, so he charged $28 to our card. So there we are, we have now been playing with the checks for a half hour. So we just left extra to cover the $10 and a small tip, he really didn't even deserve that, and we got out of there. The evening ended on a high note though, we walked to Leopold's for ice cream. Leopold's is a Savannah institution, you just have to stop there on any visit to the city. Leopold's never disappoints, there was a line out the door and into the street, but it is worth the wait. After that we walked back to parking garages and said our goodbyes. It was a perfect day, and a great birthday celebration for Becca.
Sunday
Steve and I went to Wormsloe State National Monument. This was a place we haven't been before. It's always fun to see new places that we haven't been able to work in on previous trips. This place has such a beautiful entrance. There is a mile and a half long drive into the monument that is straight as an arrow and tree lined. The trees canopy over the entire length of the driveway. You can just imagine at any moment there will be horse drawn carriages with Civil War era ladies and gentlemen on horseback. It is really spectacular. We walked along the paths to see the ruins from the original Georgia colony. I was able to get some photos and Steve and I just enjoyed our last day in Savannah.
Steve and I packed up and moved on to Charleston. We are camping at a really nice campground. We will be visiting here again. This place is a 600+ acre park with walking paths, fishing ponds, a water park, shuttle service to the historic district and just some beautiful surroundings. So our plan is to go into the historic district tomorrow and do some sightseeing. I'll be sure to let you know all about it.
